How does EMDR work?
Whether you are seeking to process specific traumatic events (such as an accident, loss, or act of violence) or a persistent pattern of experiences (such as chronic emotional neglect, repeated criticism, or a sense of not belonging), EMDR therapy can guide you toward healing. We’ll work through these 3 steps, at your pace.
1. RESOURCING

Through guided practices, you will learn to awaken states of calm and self-connection within your nervous system. You will become familiar with your psychological landscape and find pathways to the places that feel okay, positive, and even joyful. This sets a foundation of emotional regulation and internal stability, preparing you for the next phases of EMDR.
2. PROCESSING

Within the safe container of our sessions, I will guide you to bring unprocessed memories into awareness. Through a body-based technique called bilateral stimulation, the emotional charge associated with these memories will gradually decrease. You will reorganize the way your brain stores these distressing events, so that they no longer cause negative impact on your present-day experiences.
3. INTEGRATION

You will connect with a deeper and more compassionate understanding of yourself, perhaps noticing the shift between prior negative beliefs (“I am bad,” “It’s all my fault”) and a newly installed sense of empowerment (“I am safe,” “I am worthy”). Through guided practices, you will bring forth this updated version of yourself into the present and future.

How will we work together?
There is flexibility in the way we do EMDR — because therapy doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. We’ll tailor the approach to fit your needs and processing style.

Weekly EMDR therapy provides a steady and consistent approach to healing. We’ll meet for 50-minute sessions at the same time every week, for 3+ months.
Weekly therapy is a great option if you enjoy ongoing support and consistent check-ins. This approach leads to transformative healing and a deeper understanding of yourself over time.

Intensive EMDR therapy is an accelerated approach to healing, condensing the work into a shorter timeframe. We’ll meet for 3-hour sessions on an infrequent basis (one-time only, once a month, once a quarter, etc).
Due to the focused & extended time for processing, 1 intensive session is equivalent to multiple weekly sessions.
This approach is beneficial if you’re seeking faster relief from stress, trauma, anxiety, and burnout.
What’s the difference between talk therapy & EMDR therapy?
Talk therapy is like trimming the leaves of a weed — it can manage symptoms and keep things under control.
EMDR therapy digs up the roots of the weed — it addresses the source of pain, leading to lasting healing.

EMDR therapy can treat a variety of conditions, including: anxiety, depression, PTSD, complex trauma, phobias, and panic attacks.

EMDR therapy is well-suited for those who are willing to explore the past. This does not mean that you have to reiterate or relive every detail of distressing events — in fact, very little talking is required during EMDR work. Rather, it means that you are open to engaging in a process that may bring up challenging emotions, thoughts, images, and sensations, as the brain shifts “stuck” memories to a state of healthy resolution.
It’s important to be in a stage of life where this type of work is possible. This requires reliable access to basic needs (food, housing, etc.) and ability to attend sessions regularly. Other factors that impact EMDR work — such as your self-care in between sessions, emotional regulation skills, and healthy coping strategies — will be addressed and tended to during the EMDR preparation phase.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require extensive verbal recall of distressing events. You can share as much or as little information as is comfortable for you. EMDR emphasizes feeling and sensing, instead of thinking and talking.
Much of the processing that happens in EMDR is introspective and body-based. Research shows that this can lead to quicker and more significant relief from distressing memories, compared to traditional forms of talk therapy.

Everyone’s experience with EMDR is unique, and no two sessions are the same. During the processing phase, you may experience a range of emotions associated with the original memory. Various physical sensations, images, and thoughts may pass through your awareness. Your job is to simply notice what’s happening, and from there, the brain and body do the natural work of reprocessing. You will be fully awake, conscious, and supported through every step. I will guide the session so that you can stay grounded in the present, while stepping one foot into the past.
As the processing continues, your relationship to the original event will change. The emotional, mental, and physical discomfort associated with the memory will fade away.
Once the processing is complete, you’ll be able to recall the original event from a healthy emotional distance. There will be a felt sense, in your mind and body, that the past is in the past — which may bring feelings of relief, calm, and comfort; as well as new perspectives of self-acceptance and empowerment.

Research shows that EMDR can be just as effective online as it is in person.
I am specifically trained to provide EMDR therapy via telehealth, and have seen powerful healing unfold in this way.
All aspects of EMDR therapy transfer well to an online context, provided that certain conditions are in place: stable Internet connection, a private space to attend sessions, and a strong therapeutic relationship (which we will build together in our initial sessions).
Online sessions are particularly beneficial if you feel more comfortable being in your own space and if you prefer not to commute to sessions. By cutting down on travel time, there may be increased opportunity for self-care before, during, and after sessions. Instead of sitting in traffic, you can simply log into our session from your couch — with your favorite tea, a comfy blanket, and/or your pet at your side. You can personalize the space to suit your needs.
